One Christmas my brother received a wooden puzzle called "The Whole Year Puzzle". The goal of this puzzle was to arrange a set of shapes on a grid so that the squares corresponding to the current month and day were left uncovered. This page provides a solution to the puzzle for each day of the year.
The solver uses a basic backtracking search, with a non-comprehensive attempt to account for the symmetries of each piece. After each tile is placed, it also checks to see if there is an uncovered region with 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, or 11 cells (i.e., not coverable by 4- and 5-tiles), and backtracks if it finds such a region. This check speeds up the search considerably.
